  • Where are you located? Is there parking?
Our two studios are located at 800 S 8th St (the Bella Vista neighborhood) and 1912 South St (the Graduate Hospital neighborhood). There is on-street parking around both locations so if you are driving please give yourself a little extra time to search for a spot. Pay attention to timed zones and parking kiosks. Both studios are easily accessible by SEPTA bus routes and subway lines as well.
  • What are your hours?
We are not a retail shop so do not have regular set hours open to the general public. All of our registration is done online or over the phone, and we are only in the studios when classes or lessons are going on (typically nights and weekends). If you want to stop by for any reason, please contact us ahead of time and let us know! We try to answer our phone line between 9am and 5pm, but voicemails can be left anytime. Because we're a mobile-based business, email is the best way to contact us.
  • I registered for a class but just realized it doesn't work for my schedule. Can I switch to another class or get a refund?
Once a class or workshop is purchased, it is non-refundable and non-transferable. Please check your schedule ahead of time to ensure you can attend every class.
  • What happens if I miss one of the classes of a section?
If you have to miss a class due to unforseen circumstances, you may be able to make up the class by attending the same class of another section, provided that the class is not full (For example, Sewing 101 usually has a Tuesday AND a Sunday section--if you miss Tuesday, you can come to Sunday's class). Otherwise, and in the event that a student misses a class with only one section, a private make-up lesson can be scheduled at the rate of $25/hr.
  • Do I have to bring my own sewing machine?
We provide machines (Singer 4423) for all classes. However, you're always welcome to bring your own! We have experience working with machines of all types from all decades and love helping people learn on their own machines. We also provide cubbies where you can leave your machine during the duration of your class so you don't have to lug it to and fro each week!
  • Do you provide/sell fabric or will I bring my own?
We provide machines and general sewing and cutting tools, but we do not provide or sell fabric, thread or notions. For each class we will send you a supply shopping list and explain what types of fabric are appropriate for the assigned project. Philly's historic Fabric Row is only a few blocks away! Depending on the class or workshop, fabric may need to be bought before the first class, but for Sewing 101 and Sewing 201 it does not.
  • How much can I expect to spend on Sewing 101 materials?
This depends on where you shop and what fabrics you choose, but most students spend about $20-$30 for everything (fabric, thread, interfacing, hardware/accessories). We talk about this in the first class and can give you suggestions on how to save money.
  • I purchased a class but didn't receive a welcome e-mail. What do I need to know?
With each purchase, you should receive an automated e-mail confirmation, as well as a receipt from PayPal. About a week or more before the first class, you should also receive an e-mail from an instructor with information about what to expect or what materials to purchase. If the e-mail address you used to register via PayPal is different from the e-mail you use for everyday correspondence, or the class was purchased by someone else, please contact us so we can update your address on file.
  • How do I redeem my gift card?
Our system isn't set up to apply gift cards via online registration, so you will have to reach out to us so we can manually redeem it from our end and send you an invoice for any remaining balance if necessary. Please email andrea@butcherssewshop.com or call us at 215-309-1866 and let us know your gift card number, amount, & what class you would like to register for. We'll work it out from there!
  • Do you offer private lessons?
Yes, we offer private lessons on a limited schedule and with registration in advance. Lessons are $35/hour with a minimum of 2 hours per lesson. Please contact our instructor at catwalshak@gmail.com and include what you're hoping to do in the lesson and your general availability. We will then send you the link to officially register for your lesson there.
  • Do you offer classes for kids?
Yes! We offer separate programs for kids ages 5-15. Please find information about our youth sewing camps and classes at our sister site, ButchersSewShopJunior.com.
  • Do you (or your students) do clothing alterations, custom sewing, or production? If not, where do you recommend I go?"
Sorry, we are only a teaching studio and do not do any custom or freelance sewing work. We recommend visiting the shops on Fabric Row or researching your local tailor or drycleaner for that kind of work. We recommend Anh Custom Tailor or Special Occasion Alterations for tailoring. For production work, check out Sew Rob.
  • Do you accept donations of fabric or sewing equipment?
We do not accept any supply donations at this time. Please consider taking it to the Resource Exchange, a non-profit that resells arts & crafts supplies in Philadelphia.
  • Do you rent out your machines or studio space for individual use?
No, we do not rent out our equipment or space because the studio is only open when group classes are going on.
  • Where can I get my sewing machine serviced?
There are few to no options in the city of Philadelphia to get a machine serviced. We recommend Steve's Sew & Vac in King of Prussia, Authorized Sew & Vac in Collingswood, or Hayes Sewing Machine Company in Wilmington. Some JoAnn's stores also send out machines for servicing. Good luck.
  • Help! I don't know which class is right for me!
Not to worry, we're happy to help! Send us an email at andrea@butcherssewshop.com or call us at 215-309-1866 and we'll figure it out together.
